Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who were itinerant actors. His parents died when he was only a few years old. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant named John Allan and brought up partly in England (1815-20). Never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name.
Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826) but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. This led to a quarrel with Allan, who later disowned him. In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under an assumed name and age. In 1830 he was accepted to the West Point Military Academy but was dishonorably discharged in 1831 for neglect of duty.
In 1833 he went to Baltimore, to live with relatives, and there he worked(wrote) for three magazine publishing houses. During this time he wrote some of his most famous works. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was written in 1840, and contained one of his most famous works... The Fall of the House of Usher. The Murders in the Rue Morgue(1841) and The Purloined Letter are among Poe's most famous detective stories.
Twenty-six year old Edgar fell in love with his thirteen year old cousin,Virginia Eliza Clemm. One year later in 1836 they were married. Edgar and Virginia were deeply in love and were said to play with each other as if children. It is believed they did not have marital relations until she turned 16. On January 20, 1842, Virginia was playing the piano and singing to her husband when she suddenly began to cough and blood gushed from her mouth. This was caused by a pulmonary hemorrhage, a symptom of tuberculosis. Virginnia's health worsened.

Poe wrote the following letter dated February 3, 1842:
"My dear little wife has been dangerously ill. About a fortnight since, in singing, she ruptured a blood vessel, and it was only on yesterday that the physicians gave me any hope of her recovery. You might imagine the agony I have suffered, for you know how devotedly I love her."
Virginia's poor health condition causes her to become an invalid and this severly depresses Poe. Edgar while very poor attempts to ease his wife's suffering during this time.
Here is Virginia's 1846 Valentine to Edgar:
**Ever with thee I wish to roam —
Dearest my life is thine.
Give me a cottage for my home
And a rich old cypress vine,
Removed from the world with its sin and care
And the tattling of many tongues.
Love alone shall guide us when we are there —
Love shall heal my weakened lungs;
And Oh, the tranquil hours we'll spend,
Never wishing that others may see!
Perfect ease we'll enjoy, without thinking to lend
Ourselves to the world and its glee —

One day before Virginnia's death Poe wrote to a female friend:
**"Kindest--dearest friend--My poor Virginia still lives, although failing fast and now suffering much pain. May God grant her life until she sees you and thanks you once again! Her bosom is full to overflowing--like my own--with a boundless--inexpressible gratitude to you. Lest she may never see you more--she bids me say that she sends you her sweetest kiss of love and will die blessing you. But come--oh come tomorrow!".....Poe to Marie Louise Shew.
On January 30, 1847, Virginia dies. Poe is so poor that Shew pays the funeral expenses.
A grief stricken Poe latter writes:
**"Six years ago, a wife, whom I loved as no man ever loved before, ruptured a blood-vessel in singing. Her life was despaired of. I took leave of her forever and underwent all the agonies of her death. She recovered partially and I again hoped. At the end of a year the vessel broke again. I went through precisely the same scene. Again in about a year afterward. Then again--again--again and even once again at varying intervals. Each time I felt all the agonies of her death and at each accession of the disorder I loved her more dearly and clung to her life with more desperate pertinacity. But I am constitutionally sensitive--nervous, in a very unusual degree. I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity. During these fits of absolute unconsciousness I drank, God only knows how often or how much. As a matter of course, my enemies referred the insanity to the drink rather than the drink to the insanity. I had indeed, nearly abandoned all hope of a permanent cure when I found one in the leash of my wife. This I can and do endure as becomes a man--it was the horrible never-ending oscillation between hope and despair which I could not longer have endured with the total loss of reason. In the death of what was my life, then, I receive a new but--oh God! how melancholy an existence."...Poe to George W. Eveleth, January 4, 1848
Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poems Annabel Lee and Ulalume as an expression of grief for the loss of his beloved wife.
Despite Poe's assertion that he had come to terms with his wife's death, he attempted suicide in 1848. In September 1849 he disappeared on his way to visit his new fiancée in Richmond. He was found in a delirious condition, in a street gutter in Baltimore, and died on October 7, 1849.

Wings until they trailed in the dust -
In agony sobbed, letting sink her

Its Sybilic splendour is beaming

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."
Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning- little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blest with seeing bird above his chamber door-

But the Raven still beguiling all my fancy into smiling,

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing

And my soul was a stagnant tide,
Till the fair and gentle Eulalie became my blushing bride-
Till the yellow-haired young Eulalie became my smiling bride.
Ah, less- less bright
The stars of the night
Than the eyes of the radiant girl!
That the vapor can make
With the moon-tints of purple and pearl,
Can vie with the modest Eulalie's most unregarded curl-
Can compare with the bright-eyed Eulalie's most humble and careless curl.
Now Doubt- now Pain
Come never again,
For her soul gives me sigh for sigh,
And all day long
Shines, bright and strong,
Astarte within the sky,
While ever to her dear Eulalie upturns her matron eye-
While ever to her young Eulalie upturns her violet eye.
